Halloween Marathon Picks

Halloween is a great say to be a homebody and stay home watching movies.  You know, if you're not trick or treating or going to a party or working (like I will be doing *grumblegrumble*).  Here are my picks for the best Halloween marathon EVAR.  Grab the popcorn and a beverage of choice.

1. Hocus Pocus

hocus pocus halloween marathon

Ah, the quintessential Halloween classic.  This movie was a big park of my childhood.  Like what girl didn't have a big crush on Thackary Binks?  It's spooky without being scary, because I cannot handle scary movies.  It's like watching it the first time, every time.

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

nightmare before christmas halloween marathon

Also one of my favorites.  I love this movie.  Singing along to the words is a great way to get into the spirit.

3. Corpse Bride

corpse bride halloween marathon

Another great spooky Tim Burton masterpiece.  This guy has a knack for great Halloween movies, right?   It's got a few good jump scares and nice songs.

4. Boo To You Too!  Winnie the Pooh

winnie the pooh halloween marathon

Okay, guys.  I'm like five years old.  I still love this movie.  It's a great Halloween special.  It gives you the feels.

5. The Harry Potter series

harry potter halloween marathon

This series is a bastion of Halloween goodness.  It has a great magical atmosphere, a few good scares, some good laughs, and the hotness that is Draco Malfoy.  I was a big Draco fangirl back in the day.

6. The Halloweentown series

halloweentown halloween marathon

This was my favorite Disney movie as a kid.  I used to dream of being part of this movie's scenario, finding out I was a witch and going to live in a town where everyone is as weird as me.

7. The Craft

the craft halloween marathon

Probably the scariest movie on my list.  I used to get nightmares about the snakes.

8. Coraline

coraline halloween marathon

A nice take on the kid horror genre, this movie is actually a bit creepy, for a kid movie.

9. Bonus TV Binge-watch - So Weird

so weird halloween marathon

I LOVED this show as a kid.  I was so disappointed when it was cancelled, but it was one of the best shows Disney channel ever produced.

The Best Things About Fall and Winter

I LOVE it when it starts to get cold.  I prefer to be cold, since I get sick when I'm too hot.  October weather is my favorite weather, and that's not just because my birthday is in October.  In celebration of my favorite season, I'm going to list some of my favorite things about it (in no particular order),

1. Fuzzy clothes
fuzzy pajama pants winter
I have this exact one. :)

I love fuzzy clothes.  I will go to bed in fuzzy jammies, a sweater, and fuzzy socks, and be all toasty warm (but not too warm!).  It makes me feel so calm and secure to be surrounded in fuzz.

2. Hot chocolate

winter hot chocolate

I swear the gas station down the street has the best hot chocolate in the WORLD.  When it's chilly I don't get too hot from drinking it and it warms me up nicely.  It tastes like an orgasm in a cup.

3. Not getting shit for staying indoors

destiny taken king bundle
Hint hint.  I just bought this today. Watch for a review coming soon.

I am an indoor girl.  People will tell me to go outside and do something active and I just play my video games inside, in my room, and people kinda wonder about me...  But when it's cold out, I have an excuse to stay inside so I don't get as much shit about it.

4. My birthday

birthday dog

My birthday is October 17 so I love when fall rolls around because my birthday is not too far away.  I'm 23 now so I don't get a lot of presents or a party or anything like when I was little, but this year my mom got me an ice cream cake and my grandparents and great aunt sent me cards with money in them.  Not that money is the most important thing, but it is a nice perk.

5. Halloween

I have a confession, guys.  I still trick-or-treat.  I'm short enough to pass for a young teenager, and if I wear a mask and don't wear something too slutty that shows my boobs no one knows the difference.  People tell me to just buy candy, but THAT IS NOT THE POINT.  Only other kids and kids at heart get it.

6. Family time

griffin family family guy
My kinda family.
Most gatherings of my family, like Thanksgiving and Christmas, are in fall and winter.  I have a big extended family that I don't get to see very often so when we gather during the holidays, I cherish that time.  I used to hate it when I was little but I appreciate it now.

7. Fuzzy boots
winter fuzzy boots
Yes, I already mentioned fuzzy stuff.  But fuzzy boots are special.  I can just slip them on and they're comfy and I don't have to go through the trouble of lacing sneakers.  Fuzzy boots are bae.

8. Moneys

money heart

At the particular place I work, we get holiday bonuses.  I'm only part-time so I don't make a whole lot to begin with so the extra money is a big help.

What things do you guys like about this time of the year?

Lethis Halloween Updates!

lethis path of progress halloween

Lethis - Path of Progress is getting some Halloween spooky magic!  It is being updated for Halloween, featuring spooky decorations, 5 new sandbox maps (and since trade is now available in sandbox mode, you can fiscally maintain a city), and some corrections for the English version.

I hope this means they fixed some of the poor translations.

Also, in honor of the update, Lethis is now 15% off!  This game is one of my favorites so please show some support for the developers if you can.

Log Horizon logo
Dear god, it's Sword Art Online 2.0

That's probably what a lot of people thought.

While the glaring similarities are obvious in the beginning, Log Horizon deviates quite a lot from other 'stuck in an MMO' shows like Sword Art Online and .hack.

Sword Art Online was all about trying to get out of the game.  Log Horizon is about trying to learn how to live in it.

Let's start at the beginning.  LH opens with hundreds of thousands of gamers suddenly realizing they are unable to log out of the game that they play.  So what do thousands of gamers do when they're stuck in a game, can't die (because upon character death they rez at a cathedral), and they're completely bored?  Well, they start killing each other of course.

PKing and general douchebaggery becomes a big issue.  Soon the players start coming together to try and build a society.  It's not like they're stuck inside a VR system and everything about the game as a game is still intact.  No, it's not a game anymore.  The game world has become real life for them, as real as the real world is for us.  THIS is their new real world.  The thing is, it's changed.  They don't understand it anymore.  Much of the first season centers on the players trying to figure out how to build a society, and how to wrangle a bunch of rowdy gamers and make them follow rules in a world that no longer has any.

The main characters are Shiroe, Naotsugu, and Akatsuki.  Shiroe is the group's tactical genius, Naotsugu is the groups pervy dumbass with a heart of gold, and Akatsuki is the female ninja.

Shiroe does this thing all the time where he is constantly pushing up his glasses on the bridge of his nose.  This seems to be a recurring thing in anime.  I have to say the creators have a good sense of humor because other characters do poke fun at Shiroe for pushing up his glasses all the time.  Naotsugu reminds me of Kuwabara from Yu Yu Hakusho, except Kuwabara wasn't a huge perv.  He's not a bad characters at all, but he's very tropey.

Log Horizon anime review Akatsuki dressing up cute
This is exploitation, god damn it!
I'm not a huge fan of Akatsuki.  I really want to like her.  She's adorable and skilled.  I am not a fan, however, of how she pledges herself to Shiroe and calls him 'master'.  My inner feminist is roaring like a wildcat screaming 'HAVE SOME GODDAMN RESPECT FOR YOURSELF!'  BUT I do get that the attractive, subservient woman is the ideal for some people.  It just isn't for me.  Another female character gets her kicks dressing up Akatsuki in cutesy outfits even when Akatsuki clearly doesn't like it, and to me this is kind of bordering on abusive.

Let's talk about Nureha and Maryelle's boobs for a second.  Their boobs tho.  They're like fucking melons strapped to their chests and I just don't get it.  Do they hurt their backs?  Aren't they difficult to sleep with?  My boobs get in the way when I try to sleep on my stomach, so...  I can't even imagine having knockers the size of Maryelle and Nureha's.  ALSO, Nureha's weird obsession with Shiroe.

Log Horizon anime review Nureha boobs girl
Those woobages.

Okay, Nureha, Minori, and Akatsuki's weird obsession with Shiroe.  Is this a harem anime?  That's not what it said in the brochure.  I hate harem anime.  And Minori is like maybe 10-12ish years younger than Shiroe, who I'd say is in the realm of 24 years old.  I totally get crushing on the smart older guy.  The sad thing is Minori actually thinks she has a chance.

The anime starts off a bit slowly.  After the introductory couple episodes, we start off right in a rescue mission arc.  Yawn.  This arc was boring and unnecessary.  While I DO get there needed to be a way to introduce the world, they could have done it in a much more interesting way.  Serera, the girl they rescued (because of course it had to be a girl), isn't even that interesting, and she develops this obsession with the cat guy who rescues her.  Who has to be like 40 and there's no way she's older than 15.

After that bit of drudgery though, the series really picks up and gets interesting.  It explores sociopolitical themes, and themes of game-style racism (NPCs aren't real people, except now they are).  I love how it explored this.  The characters discover new ways to do things and how they can make this world work for them instead of feeling trapped in it.

Speaking of, it never explains how they got trapped in the first place.  Which is a bit weird, but I see why.  It's not about how they got where they are, it's about trying to survive and thrive there.

I love the animation and music.  The opening feels really epic, and I don't see a lot of anime with rock openings so I enjoyed this.  It gives a good overview of what the show is and who the characters are.  I didn't like the ending.  It's way too cutesy for me and the singer's voice is so high she sounds like a chipmunk.  Pass.  The animation is pretty good.  The environments and cities are really pretty and the CGI bits are very well done.  Fight scenes are a little boring because they talk a lot and go into game mechanics but it gets better as the series goes on.  The character designs could be better.  The outfits are a little bland.  Since it is a fantasy anime you'd think the clothes would be a bit spiffier, but no.

Log Horizon Anime review squad group fantasy online

I watched the dub and most of the cast fit their characters pretty well.  A few of the voices I didn't think fit the characters but I didn't think they were BAD, per se.  Just not completely right.  Like Serera's voice.  I've heard this actress in other dubs and I like her but it didn't seem like such a good fit for Serera.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed this anime despite the niggles.  The sexism and fanservice is kept to a pleasant minimum overall, I just have a talent for picking up on it.  Gamers should like this anime, and people who liked Sword Art Online should like it.  People who enjoy slice of fantasy life and sociopolitical themes should like it too.

The next anime I'll be reviewing is Tamako Market.

Something is the Better Part of Valor

The title, because I had to.

Patch 6.2.3 will be on the PTR soon.  This is a little weird since we have been explicitly told we wouldn't get any more content in Warlords of Draenor.  I'm not going to go over it all because you can read the patch notes for that shit, but I just want to give my thought on stuff I have... thought about.

There will be new timewalking dungeons from Cataclysm in addition to Magister's Terrace and Pit of Saron during their expansions' respective weeks.

They will be:

End Time

Grim Batol

Lost City of Tol'vir

The Vortex Pinnacle

Throne of the Tides

A few of these I am interested in.  End Time was one of my favorite dungeons during Cataclysm.  I have to wonder if the mounts that drop will drop for timewalking?  I believe Stonecore and Vortex Pinnacle both have mounts that drop from a boss.  I have the Vortex Pinnacle mount already though.

infinite timereaver world of warcraft timewalking mount
There will also be a new mount for Cataclysm timewalking: the Infinite Timereaver.  Blizzard KNOWS I can be bribed with mounts.  SOLD.

I have to wonder if they had been planning this all along and just didn't tell us, or pulled this out of their ass because they needed new content.  Either way, I think plenty of people will be interested in doing it.

The Return of Valor
valor points world of warcraft

Oh dear god whyyyyyy.  I just don't get it.  Unless I can buy a mount or a pet with valor, I do not give any fucks.

Cross-Realm Mythic

I think this is a good thing.  Maybe someone's on a low pop server or their guild isn't that good at raiding but they want to do mythic, this will make it a lot easier for those people to do mythic.

Grove Warden

grove warden moose world of warcraft mount raid archimonde
Defeating Archimonde in mythic difficulty will now award a quest item that you turn in and get a mount.  I talked about the Grove Warden in an earlier post.  We didn't know before how the mount would be obtained.  I have to wonder why they're adding this now while the raid has been out for a while.  I am just glad this isn't a store mount because I'd have to be fiscally irresponsible and buy it.

Housekeeping and Updates

Hello, it's been a hot minute hasn't it?  I have been very busy with school and haven't had a super amount of time to play video games or write or really do anything but school stuff.  I do have some posts floating around though.  I will be writing a review for the anime Log Horizon so be looking for that.

You may a have noticed a few small changes on the blog.  I've tried to add a few jangles and dongles to make it a bit prettier and more user-friendly.  I added a favicon that's like a little version of the Sprite Darter in my profile icon.  Images on the blog will now have a Pinterest Pin-It button pop up when you mouse over them.  I just installed Intense Debate as my new comment system.  To make navigation a little easier, I redid my tags so finding a post on a specific topic should be easy now.

Unfortunately, when I redid my tags a few of my posts somehow re-posted themselves as new, so... yeah.  It is what it is.  Not gonna stress over it.  Watch for new posts coming down the pipeline and if you have any suggestions with anything else I can do for my layout, I welcome it.

The Risks of Being Unsociable

I'm not a particularly social person.  I tend to keep to myself, in real life and in Azeroth.  The only time I interact with people the majority of the time is while raiding with my guild, which I tend to avoid because I'm not very happy with the raiding situation in my guild, but I do sometimes raid with them.  When I do, I always enjoy the banter and conversation.  They're good people, just... not good raiders.

I rarely talk in dungeons or LFR groups.  I just stay quiet and let things happen, and this late in the Blackrock Foundry, most people thankfully seem to have a fair grasp on mechanics so I don't have to rage at anyone.  It's always the quiet ones with pent-up anger.

I enjoy doing things by myself and avoid voice chat like the plague.  I like watching TV or YouTube or listening to podcasts while I play.  Everything is so automatic now that it doesn't really affect my ability to pay attention to both tasks.  If I do group with people, it is usually for simple things like doing dailies or taking of an NPC in someone's garrison.

Sometimes I wish I was better at making friends, but that's just not who I am.  My inability to make friends is in real life and WoW.  I've tried to get some of the few people I know into WoW so I can get some RAF rewards, but no dice so far.  Everyone who has a vague interest in gaming already played WoW and has since quit and has no interest in coming back.  I think that's a risk you run with a game this old, but it has aged pretty gracefully.  I looks good for its age.  People who can't get people to try WoW usually buy the Battle Chest when it goes on sale and use it to RAF people, but even though it's so cheap, I can't justify the expense right now.  Maybe around Christmas I'll pick up a few battle chests so I can get the mounts.  I'm about 5 or 6 mounts away from 200, and I know there's another 50 after that for the next achievement.  It's so daunting.  And I've never had very good luck with rare drop mounts.

So I suppose I'll keep doing my solo play, and run old instances trying to pick up those stubborn rare drop mounts.  Wish me luck.

Games I'm Most Excited for from E3

Another E3 has come and gone.  I'd say it was a good year for gaming.  So much cool stuff is on the horizon.  I looked at the games they announced and showed trailers for and I compiled a list of all the games I'm most hyped for.

1. Assassin's Creed: Syndicate
I've never played an Assassin's Creed game, but I've wanted to since they started churning them out.  During the Steam Sale the last couple weeks I bought a bunch of them so I'm going to start playing them.  I'm very excited because this one features a female protagonist (about time!).

2. Mass Effect: Andromeda
This is another game I haven't actually played the series of, but it's on my wishlist!  The trailer looked cool and this game also has a playable female protagonist, so I wanna catch up on the other Mass Effect games so I can play this one.

3. Fable Legends
I haven't played a game in this series either (are we seeing a theme here?).  It has a playable female protagonist, which is always a hook for me, and apparently this is a prequel so I don't even have to play the other Fable games to understand this one (though if I like it I probably will).

4. Tom Clancy's the Division
I'm not actually a survival game player.  The whole post-apocalyptic disease kills all the people thing never did anything for me, but I think this game looks really interesting and looks like it a unique take on the genre.  I'm really interested in where this game goes.

5. Overwatch
I've been excited about this game since I saw the trailer at BlizzCon.  It looks kind of like a cartoon CoD.  I'm thinking I'll probably be playing Widowmaker the most since sniper type characters tend to be my shtick, but Tracer looks really fun too.  I can't wait till open beta.

6. Call of Duty: Black Ops III
I've played a little Call of Duty over the years but not very much.  I just bought Advanced Warfare during the Steam sale though so I'll brush up on my trigger finger until this comes out.  For someone who's generally a pacifist, I actually really love shooters.

7. Destiny: The Taken King
I don't have original Destiny yet but it's on my list.  This is the second DLC and it looks like it's adding some cool features.

8. Kingdom Hearts III
I have been waiting for this game my whole entire life.  Like my whole life guys.  Kingdom Hearts has been my jam since middle school and I am unbelieveably hyped about this game.  The Tangled world from the gameplay trailer looks stunning and I may actually have to watch Tangled now since I haven't actually seen it.  I hope it includes maybe a cameo return to previous world like Atlantica or Halloween Town.  Those were always my favorites.

9. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel
This is part of a series I've never heard of but it looks like an interesting game so I'll be watching to see where it goes.

10. Rise of the Tomb Raider
I tried playing a Tomb Raider game when the first movie came out but I was too young to get how to play it.  During the Steam sale I bought a bunch of Tomb Raider games, including the last one, so I'll catch up on those in preparation for this.  I hope Lara's a little less whiny in it.  I also hope they release it for PS3 or Windows.

11. Street Fighter V
Oh Street Fighter.  A video gaming stable since I was a wee little lass.  I'm pretty excited about this game.  I like fighting games and I've always like Cammy so I hope she's in it.  I'm gonna kick ass with her.

12. Star Wars: Battlefront
I super excited for this.  I played the original Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Battlefront II on PS2 all the time.  Sometimes me and my brother would play together and it was one of the only times we ever got along.  There is some serious nostalgia going on here.

The Glass Cannons

Blaugust Day 28
Blaugust 2015

Some people, no matter what game they play, have the tendency to play the same types of characters.  I am guilty of doing this.  Typically I tend to play the "glass cannon" type of character.  Someone with high ranged firepower but can't take much damage.

My first glass cannon was my FOnewearl in Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst.  She was an adorable little elf spellcaster girl.  FOnewearls were very good at magic but had terrible survivability.  She was the first character I played regularly, leveling her up quite a bit before I quit the game.

My second glass cannon was a Defender in City of Heroes.  She was a storm type with electricity powers.  I focused on her offense instead of her healing but I could heal in a pinch.  I loved floating back above the ground behind the melee and throwing lightning at the bad guys.

When I started playing World of Warcraft, my mage was my main from the start.  I liked standing back and flinging spells.  I played her for a long time and raised her to max level.  Pretty soon I met a rather annoying guy who played a resto druid who thought he was hot shit, so I leveled a resto druid just to prove I was better at it than him.  Yes, I was a lot better than him.  That resto druid eventually became my main character and the rest is history.

Now I primarily play healers, but sometimes do still play ranged DPS.  It's funny how sometimes you get pushed out of your comfort zone while playing games and find you like it better that way.

I don't typically form an emotional bond with my characters like some gamers do.  They're just pixels to me, in a detached way.  I see them as me in a virtual reality and that's it.  Because I'm a redhead in real life, I always give my characters red or pink hair so it's easier to feel like they're an extension of myself.  I never get it when people make characters of a different gender than they are in real life.  I always wonder how anyone an relate to a character like that, maybe because I rarely relate to my characters at all.

Console Wars

Blaugust Day 30
Blaugust 2015

A lot of gamers seem to have one platform they always use.  Their "master race", as they say.  Some people swear by the XBox, and some swear the XBox is shit and won't use anything but a PlayStation.  Then there's those of us who have a PC and look at the XBox and PS people fighting and scratch our heads in confusion.

Personally, I'm a PC girl.  99% of the games I play are on the PC.  When I do play on a console, it's strictly a PS3 because of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.  That's the only reason I have a PS instead of an XBox.

I like PCs because they're more long-term than a console.  When you buy a new console, in 5 years it'll be obsolete again when the next generation comes out.  PCs aren't like that.  You upgrade the parts and the operating system, but your PC will last forever if you treat it right.  It's like a best friend.  Or a dog.

I'm quite fond of my PC.  It's my baby.  I don't name objects because I think it's weird but if I named any of my objects it would be my PC.  If I want to upgrade it I can just switch out the graphics card or something, I don't have to buy a whole new system.  It's my longest-term relationship ever.

What Was and What's Coming

Blaugust Day 31

Blaugust 2015

This has been a great year for video games.  So many cool games came out, and not just that but I bought a lot of old games that are new to me.  I haven't made much of a dent in my Steam list but the nice thing about a lull in WoW is that I have more time to play other games.

My favorite game I've played in the last year was Warlords of Draenor.  I've been playing World of Warcraft since Cataclysm and I enjoyed this expansion.  I liked Mists better though.  Pandas, guys.  Pandas.  I also enjoyed Lethis, but it was a pretty short game, and Warlords has lasted almost a year.

I am so excited for new games coming out, but the one I am most excited for is Kingdom Hearts 3.  I've been playing that series since I was in middle school and I've been waiting years for a new installment.  I am so excited for the new worlds they'll be including, and I hope we get to visit some old ones for funsies.  Halloweentown has my absolute favorite.

I'd like to dedicate my time in the next year to playing new games and not just playing WoW.  I'd like to finish up the games in my Steam list before I buy any new ones, because really the amount of money I've spent on Steam was ridiculous.

The Girl Cave

Blaugust Day 21

Blaugust 2015

So, this is where the magic happens.  I'll go from left to right and say what all my gear is and links to where I got it.

My left desk is from Wal-Mart that I got a few years ago.  I don't know what model it is but I think you can still get it.  It was less than 100$.  It's a little unsturdy but it's lasted through a lot of abuse.  I kind of want to repaint the top.

girl gamer setup desk pc

My keyboard is a Logitech and I was in love with it from the time I saw it.  I had a black one that was the same model but just a different color, and I literally paid extra to buy my new one because it wasn't in production anymore.  You can probably get it on eBay.  I prefer wireless peripherals because I'm pretty cord-phobic.  Next to it is a remote for my TV.

My monitor is an HP, featuring a wallpaper of Sinon from Sword Art Online.  I have pink sticky notes on it because I love sticky notes, and perched on top of it is a Logitech webcam.

My mouse pad is just a puppy with headphones that I randomly got at Wal-Mart one day, and my mouse is a Bondidea N86.  I LOVE this mouse.  It comes is pretty colors (I cart around a blue one is my school bag for use with my laptop), has 5 buttons which is plenty for me, and it's wireless.  It's very responsive and you can turn it on and off to make the battery last a good long while. It's the perfect size for my small hands.  I did have a Razer Naga Epic wireless mouse but I hated it and bought another one of these to use with my PC.   That's how much I love this mouse.

The little pink clock is one I've had for years and years.  I truly do not remember where I got it, it's so old.  There's usually a bottle of Mountain Dew next to my monitor.  In my drawer I just have little things like tape, envelopes, batteries, stuff like that.  Under it in the nook is a container for discs, because my older games are on discs.  Behind it where you can't see is a USB hub with my cable for my wireless headset plugged into it, my external hard drive (a 1 TB ADATA), my X-Box controller receiver, a flash drive, the dongles for my keyboard and mouse, and my webcam.

And now the crown jewel of my desk setup: my PC.  It's custom-made from Cyberpower PC because if I tried to put it together myself because I would have broken something.  Here's the specs:

Case: Red Bitfenix Prodigy
Hard drive: Western Digital 1 TB
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti
Processor: Intel Core i7-4790
RAM: 16 GB something or other
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z97N-WiFi
OS: Windows 8.1

girl gamer setup desk pc

Onto the next desk!  First is a stuffed Beanie Baby (remember those) that I use to hold my Skullcandy headset.  Next to it is just a little holder with a few pens it it (yes that's a Ravenclaw pen because I'm totally a Ravenclaw), scissors, my Skullcandy earbuds, a bookmark, my iPhone (which is absent because I took the pictures with it), and next to it a thing of sticky notes with my authenticator on it.

Usually my laptop is up in the closet but when I'm working on something on it it's on this desk.  This desk I also got from Wal-Mart not too long ago because I needed more desk room.  My laptop is a HP Envy 15 inch that I got new last year for school, but I may trade up for a gaming laptop in the next few years.  Next to it is a blue version of my other mouse and a mouse mat that I believe came with the mouse.  Lastly, in the corner is a little mirror I use to put in my contacts and do makeup.

My wall has a few things on it.  Taped to it is a sheet with a list of what pets give what buffs for hunters because I cannot remember that crap.  Next to that is a checklist of the stuff to do daily/weekly in WoW because I LOVE lists.  My pin board has a WoW calendar, appointment cards, and a receipt telling me about my library books that were due years ago that I swear I will read and take back.  Last on it is a sheet listing my bills so I know not to spend 50$ the day before a bill is due.

I love my desk and the setup.  I do want to get a legit L-shaped desk sometime but this is good for now.  No I don't have 3 monitors and a shit ton of crap on my desk like a lot of gamers do ("You only use wireless peripherals, you're not a real gamer!" -,-)  but I like how I have things set up.

The Daily Grind

Blaugust Day 1 (catch-up)

Blaugust 2015

I usually don't mind grinding out things in-game.  Reps, items (still need 1 more Skyshard...), raids, I'm down for all of it.  I'm a completist and an achievement hound.  Making lists and keeping busy and feeling productive is something I really enjoy.

world of warcraft reputations draenor warlords
For some reason this expansion I've been slipping on the grinding front though.  Haven't been doing the things I used to do.  I'm missing exalted with most of the Draenor reps, haven't even quested through Nagrand yet, and don't have Pathfinder.  Some of this has a bit to do with clinical depression, wherein you tend to lose interest in the things you used to like.  I'm working on that.  I like to plan things but not necessarily do them.  Oh, I'll just do it tomorrow.  I'll start tomorrow.  IT'S A TRAP.

To tackle long grinds, I first research into what the grind entails.  Do a quest, kill a mob, dance a conga?  I can do that.  Then I plan out how I'm going to do it.  What order I'll do the quests in, the most efficient way possible to accomplish what I want to do.  I really love spreadsheets and lists.  If necessary, I plan a route (like my mount circuit of awesomeness).  I find that these things really help me accomplish what I want to do.

A grind I really enjoyed was the Molten Front.  I love how the further you went, you unlocked more things, and the zone itself changed.  I would love another thing like that.  The quests fueled the story.  I don't really like grind where all you do is mindlessly kill things, though I have ways to cope with those awful boring grinds.

It helps with long grinds to watch a TV show or listen to a podcast to help me get into my zen place.  I'll do a post on my favorite podcasts some other time.  Right now I'm binge-watching Scandal on Netflix.  In the pre-new expansion slump I'll probably tackle the grinds I've been neglecting.  That feeling of accomplishment and getting things done is good to go into a new expansion with.

How to Navigate Tanaan Jungle Without Losing Your Mind

Blaugust Day 13

Blaugust 2015

Tanaan is a big place.  It's the Timeless Isle on a grand scale.  There are a butt ton of nooks and crannies, treasures, hidden pets, and the whole nine yards.  The terrain is a bitch to get through and it's filled with enemies.  Here are some addons I use to navigate the Jungle.

1. Daily Global Check - Pet Tamers

pet tamers world of warcraft daily

This addon will mark the locations of all the legendary pets in Tanaan that you can battle,  This makes it easy to devise a direct route from pet to pet to maximize your travel time.

2. Tanaan Objectives

world of warcraft tanaan objectives addon

This addon adds icons on your map marking the bonus objectives on the map that you can do for extra Apexis Crystals.  It also marks the locations of the 4 rare spawns needed for the achievement on the map with skulls, plus a larger skull for the location of Kazzak.

3. HandyNotes - Draenor Treasures

world of warcraft handynotes draenor treasures

This addon adds icons to your map marking the locations of all the treasures in the jungle, including resources and Apexis treasures.  But pro tip, don't loot all of them at once.  They can only be looted one, and they do drop the Fel-Corrupted Apexis crystals so once you loot it, it's gone.  The addon also adds icons to your map marking the locations of all the rares.  They can be removed if you wish to declutter your map a bit.

4. PetTracker

world of warcraft pettracker draenor tanaan

This addon is the crown jewel for pet collectors.  It will mark icons on the map for all pets you're either missing, are under level 25, ore less than rare quality.  There is option to filter missing pets or remove the icons entirely.

5. Factionizer

world of warcraft factionizer addon

This addon adds additional functionality to your reputations window.  If you click on a reputation, it will tell you how much more you need to the next stage and every way to bring it up.  It will list any quest you can do or mob you can kill, in addition to how much reputation each item gives.

With these addons it is way easier to navigate the Jungle without completely using your mind.  Happy smoother travels!

My Daily Azeroth

Blaugust Day 23
Blaugust 2015

I've mentioned before that I'm a huge fan of lists and organization, and I sooooo am.  I love putting information together into a cohesive piece that I can use to accomplish a goal or task.  It makes me feel very accomplished.  Lately I've been slacking on daily/weekly stuff because I'm kind of in the Warcraft lulls that happen sometimes, but maybe this post will help me get back on track.

The first thing I do is garrison stuff on all my alts.  This includes profession cooldowns and doing the mine and herb garden.  While I'm on my alts I use any cooldown materials I have accumulated to craft things to send to my bank alt to sell.

Then begins the circuit of disappointment, wherein I go down the list and kill bosses for no reward whatsoever even though they supposedly drop mounts.  The mounts are a lie.  Best case case scenario is that I do every mount-dropping raid boss on every alt every week, and every mount-dropping dungeon boss every day.  Worst case scenario, I say fuck it and don't do any, which has been the case lately.  I also like to try to fight the world bosses that drop mounts, like the ones in Pandaria, but I can't solo them yet and it isn't always easy to find a group.

Another thing I like to accomplish is running LFRs on my alts that are working on the legendary quest.  As I've said before, I keep one alt on each leg of the quest so I don't get too much burnout.

My druid, mage, and death knight are doing Argent Tournament dailies so I can finish up that part of my mount collection.  I would like to get my paladin doing those dailies as well because there's a paladin-only mount there.

My mage is doing the quests for the Venomhide Ravasaur.  I've been sitting at like 9 teeth for almost a year so I want to get that finished up.  Also, my mage is the only character with a Stable so I make sure I do those dailies.

My druid is the toon I am doing the Tanaan dailies on so I need to make sure I keep doing those so I can get exalted with the factions.  Yes, I NEED to be exalted, for mount reasons.  I also do pet battle on my druid, including the Pandaria and Draenor tamers, to level my pets quicker.  While in Pandaria, I keep an eye out for Warbringers, because MOUNTS.

All while doing this stuff, I keep an eye on the group finder in case any of the guaranteed drop mount bosses are up around Draenor, because I still need three of those.

I make a handy dandy spreadsheet that you can use.  Just replace the names of my characters with you own.  Tell me if there's anything I should add!

A Stroll Around My UI

Blaugust Day 27
Blaugust 2015

I've talked a little bit about my UI and addons before, like DBM, WeakAuras, and Vuhdo.  Now I'm going to go into a bit more depth about my UI.

This is what my UI looks like with all the bells and whistles out.  My UI is a base of LUI,  heavily modified to my specifications.  Because I'm special.  I removed almost all the frames that LUI comes with, except the one in the top right that has the micromenu.  Under it is my map, which is SexyMap.  Under it I have the quest list.  I use MoveAnything to move the quest list under the map.  My bars are Bartender.  When I'm healing I have my Vuhdo frame in the middle.  I use TidyPlates for the nameplates.  Quartz is the castbars.  To make my buttons pretty I use Masque.  The little yellow stripe on the side holds a lot of the buttons that would otherwise be on the side of the minimap, to reduce clutter.  I hate clutter.

Here is what my UI looks like with some of the clutter faded out.  My bars are faded out.  I have the micromenu and the quests hidden.  One of the buttons above the orb toggles Vuhdo on and off, which is handy.

I have a shit ton of addons.  Here's a list.

Masque: Darion  (not on Curse anymore)
PetTracker Updates  (not on Curse so may be bundled with PetTracker but showing up as separate on my addon manager)

I obviously don't have all of them on all the time.  I turn them on if I need them at the time, other wise I like to be running as few as possible.

From Google
Long Live the Queen was a game I had heard a bit about on a few podcasts and I'd never played a game like it before so I wanted to try it.  I believe I bought it during the Steam sale but I am not sure.

The art

The art of this game is really cute.  The characters all have unique looks.  They have different facial expressions for every situation and I think it gives the game more depth.  There are different images for each way you can die, some of which are pretty funny.  There are also different backgrounds for the game, and they set the scene quite well.

The options

I love how many different options there are in this game.  It's like a spider web.  The decisions you make really matter in this game, whether it be the choice to marry a certain person or which classes to take, it all REALLY matters.  A lack of a single skill point can really fuck you over, and it's important not to piss anybody off.

The detail

It's clear that a lot of thought went into this game.  In addition to all the class options, each tier has a really good description about what you're learning and why it's useful.  They do a really good job of fleshing out this country that the game is set in, and why different aspects are important.

The music

The music for this game is all piano and it's really cute.  It really sets the tone of the game.  The one downside is that, due to licensing issues, the developer of the game does not have the rights to sell the music separately or make the soundtrack available.  So the only way to get at the music is to dog through the files.

This game is highly replayable.  It's really hard to do the exact same thing twice.  There are so many options that it's always something different and you could win the game ten times and get a different story.  Not that you're likely to, because...

When you do finally get the main character to her coronation, it's really a FUCK YEAH! moment.  You've really accomplished something.  Virtually.  It's so frustrating getting her there that it's amazing that you actually managed to do it.

You're fucked
long live the queen game review chocolate death otome steam anime girl cute
Death by chocolate.
Unless you follow a guide or are a huge fan of spreadsheets... you're pretty much screwed.  You will NEVER win this game.  All the options and outcomes are so random that you may learn from a previous mistake but come upon another way to die a turn later that you were not prepared for.  You could do 50 playthroughs of this game and still not win.  ALTHOUGH, it is pretty fun to stumble on new ways to die or new options that you hadn't seen before.

Relatively short

This is not meant to be a long game, which is fine, and some people may not see this as a con.  I would have liked it to be a bit longer, personally.  Maybe they could make a sequel?  Long Live the Next Queen.  That could be a thing right?

Overall I really enjoyed this game and it gets my stamp of approval.  If anyone wants to know the way I beat it, all by myself without reading a guide, I have a copy of my log here.
